The Singapore Police Force has set up a one—stop service centre to better manage lost and found items. The new service centre, which began operating on August 1, aims to conduct faster contact tracing, and provide better service to the public. "The police have set up a found and unclaimed property office to better manage found and unclaimed properties. This includes having a service hotline (6842—9645) for members of the public to make enquiries," said Edmund Chung, assistant director of the Police Logistics Base. "Previously, all the six land divisions conduct their own tracing efforts, which we found may not be optimal," he added. An average of 118,000 lost—item reports are made every year. Topping the list are cash cards and identification cards. When found, these items are kept only for a month. Then there are other more unusual items, such as pets and even groceries. But do not expect to find them at the service centre. Pets, for example, will be sent to relevant organisations like the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). But if you were to lose something in a cab, calling the taxi operator may still be your best bet. The different companies conduct their own tracing efforts. And there are currently no plans for the police to actively collaborate with taxi operators to find the owners of lost items. Members of the public can call the hotline number 6842—9645 to lodge a report or enquire about a possible find at the police centre.
