(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 26, 2013: Boeing's [NYSE: BA] liquid hydrogen-powered Phantom Eye unmanned airborne system completed its second flight Feb. 25, demonstrating capabilities that will allow it to perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions for up to four days without refueling.

During the flight, at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Phantom Eye climbed above an altitude of 8,000 feet and remained aloft for 66 minutes at a cruising speed of 62 knots before landing. The aircraft exceeded what it achieved last year during its first flight when it flew at an altitude of 4,080 feet and remained aloft for 28 minutes.
"Today’s combination of geopolitical and economic issues makes Phantom Eye's capabilities, affordability and flexibility very attractive to our global customers," said Darryl Davis, Boeing Phantom Works president. "No other system holds the promise of offering on-demand, persistent ISR and communications to any region in the world, rapidly responding to natural disasters and national security issues."
Boeing is self-funding development of the environmentally responsible Phantom Eye, which generates only water as a byproduct of its propulsion system.
"This flight, in a more demanding high-altitude flight envelope, successfully demonstrated Phantom Eye's maneuverability, endurance and landing capabilities," said Drew Mallow, Phantom Eye program manager.
Following the first flight, Boeing upgraded the aircraft's software and hardware, including the landing gear. The upgrades paid off in the form of a picture-perfect landing.
The Phantom Eye demonstrator is capable of carrying a 450-pound payload while operating for up to four days at altitudes of up to 65,000 feet.

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: Dramatic Rescue From Flooded Athens

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: Dramatic Rescue From Flooded Athens
Source: DTN News
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 23, 2013: Several hours of heavy rain and a thunderstorm in the Greek capital Athens have flooded roads and homes, caused traffic jams and disrupted the train and tram network, officials say.

The deluge inundated basements and forced authorities to close underpasses and a central subway station. The fire department said it had received at least 600 calls to drain water from houses and businesses.

Many of the city's streets remain ankle-deep in water.

"It was one of the worst thunderstorms we have ever had in the greater Athens area [since 1961]," fire department chief Sotiris Georgakopoulos told NET state television.

At one point the rainfall was so intense that parked cars were swept away by racing waters.

A young female driver died in a major flooding in Athens during heavy torrential rain on Friday morning, police authorities announced, as the weather conditions were gradually improving.

The 24-year-old victim had been stranded in her car in the flooded main street of a northern suburb of Athens and suffered a heart attack, according to police and hospital sources, local media reported.

The heavy rainfall, which had started in the early hours of Friday and was receding by afternoon, caused major floods in several parts of Greece's capital, material damages in cars and buildings, short power cuts, traffic jams and disrupted sea transports.

The Fire Brigade received approximately 1,000 telephone calls to evacuate motorists or pump out flooded basements of homes, office buildings and metro stations.

In a central Athens district, a derelict building collapsed without injuries. A female member of a technical team which was fixing a leak on the Greek parliament building's roof was slightly injured, when a metal part collapsed and she found herself hanging through a glass panel, local media reported.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Nellis AFB Prepares For F-35 Arrival

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Nellis AFB Prepares For F-35 Arrival
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 17, 2013: NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.  -- The 57th Wing is preparing for the arrival of four F-35 Lighting IIs Feb. 28.

Arrival of the F-35s to Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., will mark the first time in the aircraft's history operational tests will be performed on the aircraft.

"It's the largest [Department of Defense] acquisition project in history," said Lt. Col. Kevin Wilson, 53rd Wing chief of joint strike fighter integration. "The Air Force's piece of that is the F-35 A model. It's the conventional takeoff and landing model often referred to as the CTOL model. That is what we'll be getting here at Nellis very shortly."

Once on station, the F-35s will initially be used for operational test purposes. Their primary use will be for developmental test support, force development evaluation and supporting operational test aircraft at Edwards AFB, Calif., in support of the initial operational test and evaluation program.

"I think everyone is ready to get the jets here and to get them flying in an operational test mode," Wilson said. "Nowhere else in the DOD F-35 program, the Marine Corps, the Navy, or the Air Force, is anyone doing any kind of operational test yet. It's all on the developmental test side, which is, 'hey how does this stuff actually work' instead of 'How are we going to actually use this?' This is the first chance for us to use that."

Nellis is initially scheduled to receive four F-35A models.

"They'll be joined by a couple more in a couple of years and eventually there will be 12 operational test F-35s here and 24 F-35s for the [U.S. Air Force] Weapons School," Wilson said.

A majority of the F-35As developmental test objectives will be accomplished at Edwards AFB.

"The major part of what Nellis' F-35 operational test jets are going to do is what's called force development evaluation."

Force development evaluation is the continuous process of evaluating how a standard issued F-35 will be utilized to best execute the mission.

"That's the biggest piece of force development evaluation is the tactics development part," Wilson said.

The 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron will design the tactics the F-35 is going to use in air-to-air and air-to surface combat. The squadron will also determine how to integrate the F-35 with other aircraft in the Air Force inventory.

Nellis does operational testing over Nevada Test and Training Range.

The NTTR provides a flexible, realistic and multidimensional battle-space to conduct testing, training and tactics development in the support of U.S. national interests. The pilots aren't limited to how fast they can fly, how low they can fly, and they face a lot of simulated threats on the NTTR providing them with a realistic training environment, Wilson said.

"That is what the operational test world needs to come as close as possible to the perfect environment as far as developing those tactics," Wilson said.

"The environment and the people involved are sure to make the F-35s time at Nellis a successful one", Wilson said.

The F-35 is the newest fifth generation fighter aircraft in the DOD.

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: A Nightmare For An iPad Traveller By Rogers

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: A Nightmare For An iPad Traveller By Rogers
*Rogers - Canada claims iPad occur roaming charges of $11,285.40 between November 7 to 12, 2012 (period of 6 days)
Source: DTN News - - K. V. Seth
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 14, 2013: We have heard mostly seniors are targeted by scammers, but I never realised as soon I turned 65 years old that Rogers, a reputable Canadian company behaves in an abnormal fashion to extract funds from seniors in any formation related to the services provided by the company  and to back up their ludicrous billing and statement would cook up a despicable cock and bull story.

I had Rogers Flex Rate Plan as 3G for my iPad2 paying $25 monthly since the conception of the Apple darling tool iPad2 early March, 2011. Rogers Flex Rate Plan covers from Coast-to-Coast in Canada only.

Prior March 2011 and to-date, I had with my family several trips abroad visiting dear, near and friends in the East & West. It is understandable Rogers Flex Rate Plan for iPad2 is and was not compatible in Asian and European countries, the regional WiFi  is required for exerting iPad2 respectively.

Beginning of the episode - my nightmare and Rogers harassment;  Mid January, 2013., I received a call from Rogers and an entity identify himself as Jamal claims outstanding of $1182.34 on G3 account relating to my iPad2, which was a shocker.  Rogers - Canada claims my iPad2 ~ 3G occur roaming charges.  This hideous episode is related to my last trip to Singapore, as I had a knee replacement surgery at Glen Eagle Hospital on November 8, 2012. Rogers claims my iPad2 ~ 3G occur enormous roaming charges.

Second day of the episode - my nightmare enlarged and added Rogers harassment; The very next day another guy Vaden called from Rogers relating the outstanding account explaining, which turn out to be an astonishment atrocious act, deflecting a heavy jolt to my understanding and claiming that in fact the actual amount I owe was $11,285.40, but Rogers was kind enough to allow a DISCOUNT of $10,000 bringing to current amount of $1182.34 and if I settle account immediately, Vaden claims that he has the authority to allow a further discount of $50.00 on the outstanding of $1182.34 and mentioned that my iPad2 usage of the internet between November 7 to 12, 2012 (period of 6 days) for downloading was 31849 MB, whereas the iPad2 was switched off for safe keeping with my wife while I was in post surgery for a week till I was able to function my laptop / iPad2. Vaden gave a reference number to the conversation, which is I575363632 (the first letter is I for Ice cream).

Besides, there were several entities namely Serena and others from Rogers calling in conjunction with the outstanding account. I would like to repeat and reemphasize that Glen Eagle Hospital Singapore issued me an User ID and Password to activate my iPad2, without their consent it was not possible to operate the internet. Our trip commenced on November 6, 2012 to Singapore and returned home to Toronto on December 17, 2012.

It seems utility companies like Rogers has enormous authority and power to charge consumer at will unquestionably. It is time for the authorities to protect seniors from such fraudulent scams. Technology should be used as a boon and not as a curse.

I browsed through the internet and noticed umpteen articles on this aspect in pattern and self-explanatory.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: New US Navy High-Speed Ship Unveiled

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: New US Navy High-Speed Ship Unveiled
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 14, 2013: The US Navy has unveiled the USNS Spearhead - its first Joint High Speed Vessel, capable of transporting troops and equipment more quickly than ever before.

The USNS Spearhead is the Navy's first Joint High Speed Vessel. It is designed for rapid intra-theatre transport of troops and military equipment.

The ship was built in Mobile, Alabama and is docking in St Petersburg, Florida for a few days so top military brass at MacDill Air Force Base and Central Command can tour the ship.
It is a 338-ft long catamaran that can transport 600 tonnes vehicles, supplies and equipment.

"When we're going fast it feels very much like you're flying in an airplane," said Captain Douglas Casavant.

USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1), the innovative high-speed catamaran transport ship under construction by shipbuilder Austal in Mobile, Alabama, successfully completed Builder's Sea Trials (BST) on April 19 in the Gulf of Mexico. The trials encompassed over 50 demonstration events that enabled the shipbuilder to rigorously test the ship and all of its systems in preparation for final inspection by the United States Navy before delivery.
Notable achievements during the trials included a demonstration of major systems along with first-of-class standardization and maneuverability trials, reaching a top speed in excess of 35 knots.
A series of high-speed ahead and astern maneuvers in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrated the effectiveness of the ship’s four steerable waterjets. In the course of repeated high-speed turns the ship demonstrated the stability and agility of the catamaran hullform, with the JHSV exhibiting virtually no heeling motions throughout the radical turns.
Upon returning from the full-power trial, Joe Rella, President and Chief Operating Officer of Austal USA, remarked: “The successful first run trials for this prototype vessel validates the quality and reliability of Austal’s shipbuilding know-how. I have never witnessed a more problem-free Builder’s Sea Trial than USNS Spearhead’s. The global Austal organization successfully participated in the design, procurement, and production of this ship with a great outcome, all being accomplished while locally, Austal USA continues to hire new workers and expand our facilities. This is a telltale sign of the dedication of our team of shipbuilding professionals.”
Austal's US facility is a full-service shipyard offering design, construction and high-speed vessel service and repair. As Austal continues to expand its service and repair capabilities, the company is well positioned for new business with engineering, test and trials capabilities, and a new waterfront facility all co-located on the Mobile Bay waterfront.
Austal is currently under contract with the U.S. Navy to build nine 103-metre JHSVs under a 10-ship, US$1.6 billion contract and five 127-metre Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class vessels, four of which are a part of a 10-ship, US$3.5 billion contract.
For the LCS and JHSV programs, Austal, as prime contractor, is teamed with General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics. As the ship systems integrator, General Dynamics is responsible for the design, integration and testing of the ship’s electronic systems including the combat system, networks, and seaframe control. General Dynamics’ proven open architecture approach allows for affordable and efficient capability growth as technologies develop.
Austal has grown into one of southern Alabama’s largest employers with over 2,800 employees on staff hailing from the Mobile Area, Mississippi, Florida, and beyond. Under the current workload, Austal expects to employ over 4,000 Americans by the end of 2013, and will be ready to help the U.S. Navy meet any national security contingency ahead.

DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS : North Korea Defies World Opinion With Nuclear Test

DTN News -  KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS : North Korea Defies World Opinion With Nuclear Test
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources By Jung Hawon (AFP)
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 11, 2013: North Korea on Tuesday staged its most powerful nuclear test yet, claiming a breakthrough with a "miniaturised" device in a striking act of defiance that drew condemnation from global powers including its sole patron China.

The isolated state said its third underground test, after previous detonations in 2006 and 2009 that triggered a raft of UN sanctions, was a direct riposte to what it termed US "hostility".
North Korea's claim of miniaturisation will be of particular concern, suggesting it is a step closer to fitting a nuclear warhead onto a ballistic missile, following its successful launch of a long-range rocket in December.
The confirmation from state news agency KCNA came nearly three hours after seismic monitors detected an unusual tremor at 0257 GMT in the area of the country's Punggye-ri nuclear test site, close to the Chinese border.
Analysts said the timing appeared to be an attention-grabbing calculation from a state well versed in provocative acts, coming just ahead of US President Barack Obama's State of the Union address at the start of his second term.
Obama denounced the test and called for a "swift" and "credible" international response, as the Security Council readied to meet. Condemnation came from others including Russia, while Japan saw a "grave threat" to its own security.
China, whose trade and aid are a life-support to impoverished North Korea, expressed "firm opposition" to the nuclear test and noted that it came "despite widespread opposition from the international community".
"We strongly urge the DPRK (North Korea) to honour its commitment to denuclearisation, and not to take any actions which might worsen the situation," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The UN Security Council was expected to debate new measures when it meets on Tuesday morning in New York. The United States and its allies will push hard for China to get tough with its erratic ally and ramp up existing sanctions.
But China's leverage is limited, observers say, by its fear of a North Korean collapse and the prospect of a reunified, US-allied Korea directly on its border.
The foreign ministry statement called "on all parties to respond calmly" and to rely on dialogue in a moribund "six-party" process involving the two Koreas, China, the United States, Russia and Japan.
It was the North's first nuclear test since its new, youthful leader Kim Jong-Un took over from his father, Kim Jong-Il. Security analysts said it sent a bold message of intent following a successful long-range rocket launch in December.
"The launch and the test are empirical evidence that Kim and his regime have no intention of negotiating away the North's nuclear programme any time soon," said Paul Carroll, programme director at the US-based Ploughshares Fund.
On a technical level, along with the miniaturisation aspect, experts are hungry to know if North Korea has switched from plutonium to a new and self-sustaining nuclear weaponisation programme using uranium.
The KCNA statement did not specify what fissile material was used, but noted that the test's success had provided the North with a "diversified" nuclear deterrent.
The North has substantial deposits of uranium ore and it is much easier to secretly enrich uranium, which can be done in centrifuges rather than the nuclear reactor required for plutonium enrichment.
Tuesday's explosion had a yield of six to seven kilotons, South Korean defence ministry spokesman Kim Min-Seok told reporters, significantly more than the 2006 and 2009 tests, which both used plutonium.
The explosive yield compared with 15 kilotons in the world's first atomic bomb dropped by the United States on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945.
North Korea's first test yielded less than one kiloton and was widely seen as a dud. The second test yielded between two and six kilotons, according to Seoul.
The third test throws down a stark security and diplomatic challenge to Obama as well as to new Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Paik Hak-Soon, a North Korea expert at the Sejong Institute in Seoul, said Kim Jong-Un was intent on triggering a crisis that would force the international community to negotiate on his terms.
"The UN is running out of options and probably knows new sanctions would only have a limited impact," Paik said.
"The only real option for curbing further provocation is starting a dialogue with the North, but that will be very difficult given the domestic political pressure on leaders in the US, South Korea and Japan," Paik said.
